What F22 means

F22 is a front door lock message on Maytag front-load HE washers, the MHW models such as the MHW5630HW and MHW8630HC. The washer needs the door completely closed and locked before it will run. If the latch is blocked, dirty or not catching, the control stops the cycle and shows F22. You may hear the door try to lock and fail, or see the cycle refuse to start at all.

Common causes of F22

  • A door not pushed fully closed
  • Clothing or shipping material in the way of the latch
  • Detergent or softener buildup around the door lock
  • The lock mechanism and its wiring, after the simple checks
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Open the door and close it firmly. 2. Make sure no clothing or packing material sits on the latch. 3. Wipe around the door lock with a soft, damp cloth if you see buildup. 4. Reduce the size of the load if it was large, then restart.

! Why to stop there
  • A clean latch that still will not lock points to the lock itself, which we test with the washer
  • A door that shuts but does not align can be a hinge or seal issue, so we check the whole door
  • We will say so if an older MHW would cost more to fix than it is worth
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F22F22 questions
What does F22 mean on my Maytag front-loader?

It is a door lock problem. The washer does not sense a fully closed and locked door, so it will not run. Check the latch, the door seal area, and the size of the load, since an overstuffed drum can stop the door from closing fully.

Can a big load cause it?

Yes, a large load can keep the door from closing fully. Take some items out, make sure nothing is caught at the latch, close the door firmly and try the cycle again.

How do I clean the lock area?

Use a soft, damp cloth around the door lock to remove detergent buildup. Do not spray cleaner into the latch. If F22 stays, we test the lock and quote in writing.
