What F8E3 means
On Maytag front-load HE washers such as the MHW5630HW, MHW6630HC and MHW3505FW, F8E3 reports an overflow condition: there is too much water or foam in the washer. Excess suds usually come from detergent that is not HE, or from using more than the recommended amount, especially with very soft water. On top-load HE washers such as the MVW6230HW, the published guidance names no cause for F8E3 and lists only a power reset. The cycle stops and the tub may hold water or foam.
Common causes of F8E3
- Too much detergent, or detergent that is not high-efficiency
- Very soft water making a normal dose foam heavily
- Water level sensing that reports an overflow when the tub is not truly overfull
- On top-loaders, a cause the guidance does not name
1. Press the power button and let the washer drain. 2. Use only HE detergent, and measure it every time. 3. If your water is very soft, use less detergent than the label suggests. 4. Unplug the washer for 5 minutes, then restore power and run a rinse or short cycle. 5. If F8E3 returns with little detergent in the tub, stop and tell us.
- If suds are not the cause, the level sensing circuit and the inlet valves need testing
- A washer that fills when it should not is a water problem we check before it floods the floor
- We tell you plainly if an older washer is not worth the repair, with the price in writing first

Why does my Maytag show F8E3 after laundry day?
Front-loaders raise it when the tub holds too much water or foam. Non-HE detergent or too much detergent is the classic reason, particularly in very soft water.
Does a top-loader mean the same thing?
The published guidance for top-load washers names no cause and lists only a power reset. The overflow wording is stated for front-loaders only, so a top-loader needs testing to learn more.
Is it safe to keep running the washer?
If suds are the cause, correct the detergent first. If water seems to be rising without suds, stop using it and call us for a written price.
