What d9 means

A d9 code on the older Maytag commercial coin and card operated dryers (MDE/MDG21PD and MLE/MLG23PD families) means a voltage problem: the control reads less than 90 volts AC at the machine. That points to the building supply rather than the dryer itself. On the display you see d9, and the dryer may not run or may restart oddly. If a debit card reader is fitted, the reader wiring is also part of the check. These older machines are still in many laundry rooms.

Common causes of d9

  • Low voltage reaching the dryer from the supply
  • Tripped or weak breaker feeding the machine
  • Debit card reader or its wiring
  • Loose connection at the dryer's power entry
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Check that the dryer's circuit breaker is fully on and not partly tripped. 2. See whether other machines on the same supply have trouble. 3. Note whether the code appears on every start or only at busy times. 4. Do not open panels or touch wiring. Call us so we can measure the supply.

! Why to stop there
  • A voltage code usually means the supply or a connection, so the dryer itself may be fine
  • We test the supply and the reader wiring before suggesting any dryer part
  • If the cause is building wiring, we say so plainly instead of replacing parts that work
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
d9d9 questions
Is d9 a dryer failure?

Not necessarily. The control is reporting low voltage at the machine, which often comes from the supply or a connection. We measure it before recommending any part.

What if I use a debit card reader?

Then the reader and its wiring are part of the check, since the guidance includes them. Tell us whether the code appears with card payments only.

Can a tripped breaker cause d9?

A breaker that is partly tripped or weak can lower the voltage the dryer sees. Check it first, and call us if it is on and the code keeps showing.
