What F5 means
F5 on a Maytag built-in wall oven refers to the oven door latch assembly, the door latch switches, or the wiring connecting them. The latch locks the door for self-clean and tells the control whether the door is open or shut. If the control cannot confirm the latch position, it shows F5. You may find that the oven will not start a cycle, that the door will not lock or unlock, or that a cycle stops partway through. Codes with an added E digit, such as F5 E3, are separate entries.
Common causes of F5
- Door latch assembly
- Door latch switches
- Wiring to the latch
1. Close the oven door all the way and clear away anything caught in it, such as a dish towel or a pan handle. 2. Switch the oven's breaker off for a minute. 3. Switch it on. 4. Watch the display for F5, then run a short bake.
- A latch can look fine and still send a bad signal to the control, so we test the switch circuit directly
- We work out whether the latch, a switch or a wire is the cause before ordering anything

Why will my oven door not open with F5 showing?
The latch may be stuck in the locked position because the control cannot confirm where it is. Do not force the door. Try the breaker reset, and call us if it stays locked.
Does plain F5 match F5 E3?
They are close. F5 E3 names the lower oven door latch assembly, and plain F5 names the oven door latch assembly. On a double oven the digit helps us pick the right door.
Can an older oven be repaired for this?
Often yes. Latch assemblies are a common repair on wall ovens that have seen many years of use. We quote first and say plainly if an older oven is not worth the cost.
