What Indicator or Display Flashing means
A flashing indicator or display on a Maytag smoothtop cooktop means the control thinks one or more keys are permanently pressed. Water, a pot lid, a towel or dried spatter on the touch panel can all look like a held key. On an induction model the flashing can also point to the pan itself: a pot that is not magnetic, too small for the cooking area, or sitting off center will make the display blink and the heat refuse to start.
Common causes of Indicator or Display Flashing
- Debris, liquid or an object resting on the touch panel
- A pan that is not magnetic, too small or off center (induction)
- Touchpad that reads a key as pressed after cleaning
1. Switch every control off. 2. Lift anything off the control area and wipe away spatter or moisture. 3. Clean the touch panel thoroughly with a soft damp cloth and dry it. 4. On induction, use a magnetic pan of suitable diameter and center it on the cooking area. 5. Turn the control on again and watch the display.
- If the flashing continues on a clean, dry panel, the touchpad may be reading a key as held
- We check each key response and the wiring behind the panel
- A clean panel and a proper pan leave the touchpad as the next suspect, which we test key by key

Why does my cooktop flash when nothing is on it?
The control reads a pressed key even when you are not touching it. Moisture and film across the panel are the usual reasons, so a careful clean and dry is the first move.
How do I know if my pan is the problem on induction?
A magnet that sticks firmly to the bottom of the pan shows it is suited to induction. A pan that is too small, or sitting off the ring, will also keep the display blinking.
Could the touchpad be wearing out on an older cooktop?
Yes, touch panels do age. If cleaning and the right pan make no difference, we test the keys and the wiring and tell you honestly if a repair is not worth the cost.
