What Lock means

Lock on a Maytag electric or induction cooktop means the Control Lock is active, a feature that prevents unintended use of the cooking areas. If it was switched on while the cooktop was without power, the surface cooking areas cannot be turned on from the touch controls at all. If it was switched on while the cooktop had power, every key is locked except Power and Off. Nothing is broken; the cooktop is waiting to be unlocked.

Common causes of Lock

  • Control Lock switched on by a touch or by a cleaning cloth
  • Lock set during a power interruption and still active
  • Touchpad reading a held key that keeps re-locking the controls
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Touch and hold LOCK for 3 seconds to unlock the cooktop. 2. If the cooktop still will not respond, switch off its breaker for one minute and turn the breaker back on. 3. Wipe any moisture off the touch panel. 4. Try one cooking area at a low setting.

! Why to stop there
  • If the lock returns by itself, the touchpad may be registering a key press
  • We check the panel response before blaming any part
  • Only a lock that will not release, or keeps returning, becomes a repair
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
LockLock questions
How do I turn off Lock on my cooktop?

Touch and hold the LOCK key for 3 seconds. The display should clear, and the cooking areas respond again. If nothing changes, the next step is the breaker reset.

Why did my cooktop lock itself?

Most often a cleaning cloth or a pot lid pressed the key. A cooktop that locks again and again may have a touchpad that senses a key that is not being pressed.

Is Lock a repair job?

Usually not. It is a feature, not an error. We only get involved when the unlock does not work or the lock keeps coming back on its own.
