What U means
On Maytag electric cooktops, U can mean different things. The brand's description of the code is a problem with the electrical power supply. The same letter also shows when the cooktop detects no pan on the cooking area, and when the Keep Warm function is on. So the first job is to rule out the easy readings, a missing or poorly placed pan and an active Keep Warm setting, before the supply to the cooktop is questioned.
Common causes of U
- No pan, or a pan too small or off center, on the cooking area
- Keep Warm function active on that area
- Power supply to the cooktop interrupted or unstable
- Control board reacting to a supply problem
1. Place a suitable pan on the cooking area and see whether U goes out. 2. Check whether Keep Warm is on and switch that function off. 3. If U stays, turn off the cooktop breaker for one minute and turn it back on. 4. Watch for one minute to see whether the code returns, then test the cooking areas.
- A U that stays with a good pan and no Keep Warm means we measure the supply
- We test whether the voltage at the cooktop stays steady under load
- We measure the voltage at the cooktop under load, which a reset cannot tell you
Other Cooktop codes
Does U always mean something is wrong?
No. It can simply tell you the cooktop sees no pan, or that Keep Warm is running. It matters only when it stays after you place a pan and clear Keep Warm.
What does the power supply reading mean for my kitchen?
It means the cooktop is not getting steady power. Causes range from a loose connection to a weak breaker, and we measure it before touching any part of the cooktop itself.
Should I keep resetting the breaker?
Once is reasonable. If U returns after the reset, repeated flipping will not help and may hide a loose connection, so book a test and leave the cooktop off.
Still seeing U?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
