What C81 or C83 means
C81 and C83 on a Maytag electric, smoothtop or induction cooktop mean the cooktop has overheated. The control has shut down the cooking area to protect itself, so you will see the code and heat will stop. Turn every surface control to off. Poor airflow under the cooktop is the main thing to look at, especially if the cooktop is not installed above an oven and the cabinet below is used for storage. If an oven is running beneath it, turn that off too.
Common causes of C81 or C83
- Items in the cabinet restricting airflow to the bottom of the cooktop
- An oven below operating at high heat
- Cooktop installed with too little clearance
- Cooling path or a sensor that reads high
1. Turn all surface controls to off. 2. If the cooktop is not installed above an oven, open the cabinet doors below and look for items pressed against the underside. 3. Move anything away from the bottom of the cooktop. 4. Turn off the oven if it is running. 5. Let the cooktop cool fully before you try it again.
- If airflow is clear and the code returns, the cause may be inside the cooktop
- We check the installation clearance as well as the cooktop itself
- A cooktop that overheats repeatedly should not be used until we have tested it
- You see a written price before any work

What is the difference between C81 and C83?
The brand treats them together as overheating of the cooktop. Which one shows depends on the cooktop's own sensing, and both call for the same checks of airflow and cabinet contents.
Why does cabinet storage matter?
Many cooktops draw cooling air from underneath. Pots, baking sheets, or boxes pressed against the underside can block it, so the cooktop shuts the heat off to protect itself.
Can I use the cooktop again after it cools?
If the cause was blocked airflow and you cleared it, it will often work. If the code returns, stop using it and let us check the installation and the cooktop.
