What F2 means

An F2 code on a Maytag electric cooktop means the surface cooking area is too hot. The control has paused the heat to protect the glass and the electronics. Take the pans off the cooking area and the code goes away once it has cooled. If you turn the cooking area back on and F2 returns, the cooktop is still too hot, so switch it off again and give it more time. This covers Maytag radiant, smoothtop and induction cooktops.

Common causes of F2

  • Cooking area still hot from earlier use
  • Cookware that traps heat or sits poorly
  • Cooling airflow under the cooktop restricted
  • Temperature sensing that reads high
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Switch off the cooking area and lift the pans away. 2. Let the surface cool; F2 clears by itself when it has. 3. If you switch it on and F2 comes back, the surface is still too hot, so turn it off again and wait longer. 4. Reset the cooktop's power at the breaker(s) with a one minute pause, and watch it for a minute.

! Why to stop there
  • If F2 appears on a cold cooktop, the temperature sensing may be reading wrongly
  • We check airflow under the cooktop as well as the sensor
  • Any repair comes with a 30-day workmanship warranty
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F2F2 questions
Does F2 mean something is damaged?

No. It is a protective response to heat. If you remove the pans and let the glass cool, the code usually clears and normal cooking resumes.

Why does F2 come back right after I restart?

The surface has not cooled enough yet. Switching the cooking area on early makes the control see the same heat again, so wait longer, keep the pans off, and try again once the glass feels cool to the touch.

What if F2 shows when the cooktop is cold?

That suggests the sensing is wrong rather than the heat itself. Leave the cooktop off and call us, so we can test the temperature sensor and the control before you rely on it again.
