What F21 means
F21 on a Maytag electric cooktop has two documented meanings. On the electric cooktop page it means a problem with the power supply frequency. On the radiant cooktop page it means the cooktop may be overheating, so the installation should be verified and the cooktop allowed to cool for about 5 minutes. You see F21 and the heat may stop. Either way, the brand's instruction is to cycle the breaker for one minute and watch the cooktop.
Common causes of F21
- Supply frequency or power quality issue
- Overheating from restricted airflow or poor clearance
- Control reading a sensor value as too high
- Wiring or connection to the cooktop
1. Turn off all surface controls and give the cooktop about 5 minutes to cool. 2. Reset the cooktop's power with a one minute break at the breaker(s). 3. Wait a minute; F21 may or may not reappear. 4. If it does, leave the cooktop off and call us.
- We first work out whether it is a supply matter or a heat matter on your cooktop
- We check airflow and installation clearance, then the supply and the control
- You approve a written price first

Why are there two meanings?
Different cooktop versions use F21 for different conditions. The electric page names the supply frequency and the radiant page names overheating, so we identify your model and test which one applies.
What does supply frequency mean?
The cooktop expects the power to alternate at a steady rate. If the control sees something outside that, it stops and shows a code. A test of the supply shows whether that is the case.
Is it safe to try again after the reset?
A short test is reasonable once the cooktop has cooled and the breaker has been reset. If F21 comes back, stop using it and call us so we can test the supply, the installation, and the control.
