What F12 means
On Maytag electric cooktops, F12 has two readings depending on the cooktop. The page for the electric cooktop describes a possible problem with a hotplate (a cooking surface, burner or element) or its wiring. The page for radiant element models describes an internal communication error on the touch control module. You see the code and the affected cooking area may not heat, or the whole cooktop may stop responding. In both cases the brand's step is a one-minute breaker reset.
Common causes of F12
- Hotplate element or its wiring on an electric model
- Touch control module communication on a radiant model
- Wiring connectors between the control and the element
- Power board that drives the cooking area
1. Turn off all surface controls. 2. Take the cooktop off power at its breaker(s) for one minute, then restore power. 3. Stay with the cooktop for a minute and see whether F12 reappears. 4. Test each cooking area for heat. 5. If F12 comes back, leave the cooktop alone until we have looked at it.
- We first work out which of the two meanings applies to your cooktop
- We test the element and its wiring before the control, or the module link before the board
- You get a written price before any part is ordered
Other Cooktop codes
Which F12 do I have?
It depends on your cooktop's type and control. We read the model plate and test the cooking areas to decide whether it is the element side or the module side.
Does F12 mean an element is burned out?
Possibly, on the electric model, where the code mentions the hotplate and its wiring. But the code alone does not prove it, and we test the circuit first.
Can I use the other cooking areas?
If they work normally after the reset, short use is reasonable. If the code returns or the cooktop behaves oddly, turn it off and book a visit.
Still seeing F12?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
