What F4 means
F4 on a Maytag electric or induction cooktop means a pot or pan is too close to the control panel. The panel senses the heat or presence of the pan, so the cooktop stops to protect the touch controls. Center the pot or pan on the cooking area, and make sure nothing hot is resting on the touch controls. Move the pot or pan off the cooktop and wait 5 minutes for the control panel to clear. If F4 stays, a one-minute breaker reset follows.
Common causes of F4
- Pan placed toward the control side of the cooktop
- Hot cookware or a handle over the touch controls
- Warmth lingering at the control panel
- Control held in the alert until power is cycled
1. Lift the pot or pan off the cooktop. 2. Wait 5 minutes for the control panel to clear. 3. When you start again, set the pan in the middle of the cooking area. 4. If F4 stays, reset the cooktop's power with a one minute pause at the breaker(s). 5. Watch the cooktop for a minute afterward.
- If F4 returns with a cool panel and a centered pan, the panel's sensing may be the cause
- We test the touch control and its connection

Other Cooktop codes
Why does a pan near the controls cause a code?
The control panel guards its electronics from heat. A pan too close can heat the glass near the keys, so the cooktop shuts off the heat.
How long should I wait?
About 5 minutes with the pan removed, as the brand advises. If the control panel is cool and F4 stays, use the one-minute breaker reset, and call us if the code keeps returning.
Does it damage the cooktop?
The code exists to prevent damage to the touch controls. Keep pans centered on the cooking area and handles away from the keys, and the code usually does not return.
